CHENNAI: Reservation for the differently-abled in government jobs will be increased to five per cent from the present three per cent. The Bill for this has been examined by a Parliamentary Standing Committee, Lov Verma, secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Down Syndrome Congress here, he said the Ministry was also in the process of redrafting the Persons With Disabilities Act, 1995 to cover a total of 19 disabilities from the current seven.
There would be stringent penalties for non-observance of the regulations, Verma said.
A National Commission for Disabled would be constituted soon, the Secretary added.
The Ministry, he said, had selected a total of 48 cities across India where a pilot project would be launched to make all public buildings like hospitals, goverment offices, etc more disabled-friendly.
The cities included Delhi, Shillong, Indore, Bhopal, Hyderabad and others, he added.
Responding to queries on the vacancies to be filled under the three per cent reservation for the disabled, he said an action-plan would be drawn to address each concern.
