The Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deaf-Blind, in Mumbai was established in 1977 as the first organisation in India to develop education programmes for deaf-blind children. It focuses on the desire to save deaf-blind children from misconceptions of being labelled as "mentally retarded" and to get them their due attention in society. The institute has a special residential school for deaf-blind children, with students from different parts of the country. The organization offers Free/subsidised education, transport, nutrition, hearing aids, medical facilities, uniform. Counselling services for children, teachers and parents are also arranged for. Pre-vocational training and every effort to rehabilitate him / her in the society,
