Semi-visually impaired Him Prasad Gautam has developed a fourth version of Dristibachak software for visually challenged people.

At a programme organised in the Lake City today by Inclusive Empowerment Centre Nepal, an organisation working for visually disabled people, Computer Association Nepal (CAN) Kaski chapter General Secretary Achyut Khaniya made public the latest version of the software.

In the previous version of the software, matters inked in Unicode font could be changed into audio file and played in MP3 format after keeping the matter in a pen drive or memory card.

Apart from retaining all the earlier facilities, the current version has added language that people can easily speak. Gautam said he would have to work hard a few more years as the current voice is not exactly like that of a human being.

He added that he would put efforts to change bulky books into audio file and enable visually impaired people to hear them easily. However, for this, all the files have to be in Unicode font, as software cannot detect font other than Unicode.

In the software’s latest version, you can hear the sound of the letter you type. This facilitates visually challenged people to write and edit their writing.

Environment engineer Gautam at the Department of Drinking Water had started developing a software after he lost his eyesight 12 years ago. He has developed software in Bengali, Urdu and Sri Lankan languages too.

Bijaya Lamichhane, Vice-chairman at Visually Impaired Union, Kaski, said that the latest version of the software would help visually challenged people. “Still, visually impaired people are having trouble using computer in Nepali language. Lamichhane urged the government to invest on visually impaired-friendly technology. Inclusive Empowerment Nepal General Secretary Khomraj Sharma said the software would help visually impaired people to use the computer and widen the realm of knowledge.
