IIT-Delhi to showcase its best ideas

Thu, 04/16/2015 - 10:58 -- geeta.nair

IIT-Delhi will hold an event titled ‘Open House’ on Saturday to show innovative projects such as nanomaterial based water purification device, badminton playing robots and a bus identification system for visually impaired persons.

Some 100 laboratories at the institute will open their doors to the public, Dean (Research) at the Indian Institute of Technology Suneet Tuli said. Other projects to be exhibited at the one-day event include portable and low-cost device for early detection of infectious diseases, electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to fuel, Braille tutor device and a tactile interface to enable visually impaired people to read digital text.

In its 11th edition, the Open House will showcase nearly 70 research projects. Over 2,500 people have registered for the event so far, according to the organisers.

“The annual IIT Open House represents the culmination of a year’s worth of inimitable innovations of IIT-Delhi. The exhibition is an opportunity for the wider community to experience the innovative vision of our students. We are confident that this year will also see thousands of enthusiasts queuing to catch a glimpse of the innovations,” Tuli said.

He said that last year, the event had seen a footfall of over 5,000 people.

On the nanomaterial based device for water purification, Ashok K Ganguli said it can be used for treatment of industrial effluents before releasing them into water bodies.

“The water purification device is based on cheap and eco-friendly nanomaterial, which is highly efficient in removal of toxic metal ions and dissolved organic contaminants from water. Simplicity of its design and lower cost make it advantageous over other filtering devices available in the market,” he said.
Another interesting innovation by IIT students is a bus identification system, called OnBoard, that enables visually impaired people to board a bus independently without any assistance. This is being tested in 24 Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport buses in Mumbai.

IT Open House 2015 will include an educative session ‘3D Printing: Revolution Beyond Imagination’ addressed by P V Madhusudhan Rao.
