Blind judo competitor, 12, not allowing disability to block his path

ustin Wack looks like any other 12-year-old competing in the Edmonton international judo championships.

Looks can be deceiving.

Wack has been blind since birth.

The soon-to-be teenager, who proudly says he stands five feet “and one-quarter-inch” tall, has already achieved an orange belt after two years of judo training, and has won some silver and bronze medals in competitions.

Blind Ukrainians to enjoy soccer with headphones

Visually impaired or blind football fans in Ukraine will get an opportunity to follow Euro 2012 matches at Ukrainian and Poland stadiums through headphones with live match commentary.

According to Valery Sushkevich, head of the Ukrainian National Assembly of Disabled, Ukrainian specialists are training volunteers to comment on football matches for the blind, Xinhua reported.

The Union of European Football Association (UEFA) will install special equipment with microphones and headphones at each of the eight Euro 2012 stadiums, Sushkevich said.

At Phoenix Market City, Viman Nagar, a large group of people gathered early on Sunday morning. A neatly painted lane pointed towards the exit from Gate number 4. From the starting point, 30 cars stood bumper-to-bumper waiting for the signal to be given. At about 7.45 am, the first car was released at the Blind Men's Car Drive. People sporting red caps and t-shirts spelt support.

National athletics meet for visually challenged

Approximately 400 athletes from all over the country will be seen in action in the 8th edition of the National Athletics for the Visually Challenged to be organized by the Punjab Sports Association for the visually challenged persons with the help of Bharat Blinds Sewak Samaj at Baddowal village on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur road on April 17 and 18.

 

The information was given at a press conference here today by chief organiser Gurpreet Singh Chahal and organizing committee chairman Tit Ram.

 

Chess tourney for the blind begins

On a day when Vishwanathan Anand won the world chess championship for the fifth time, as many as 106 visually impaired players competed against one another at the all-India chess tournament here at the Devnar School for the Blind on Wednesday.
Twenty of the players are currently ranked with the world chess federation body and Darshan Patel was the top seed at this tourney as he has 1838 points.
With age being no bar, children too got into the fray in right earnest and took on much older opponents.

Washout gives England 2-0 win

The last game of the Twenty20 series between the England and Australia Visually Impaired cricket teams was washed out at Feckenham CC, meaning a 2-0 England victory.
 
Following the same fate for the first match on Sunday, the hosts won both legs of a double-header yesterday at Leamington CC to take revenge for Australia’s 3-0 one-day whitewash.
 
Luke Sugg, England captain for the T20 rubber, said: "I'm delighted to win the T20 series. There have been some excellent contributions throughout both series.
 

Rally for visually impaired goes the Time Speed Distance way

It's time for the visually impaired to prove their navigating skills when Foresight - Car Rally for the Blind 2012 gets under way on Sunday.
The Time Speed Distance rally, organised by the Bangalore Knight Round Table (BKRT), in association with Round Table India (RTI), will be flagged off from Palace grounds and finishes at the same point, covering a distance of 45 km in two hours and 30 minutes with an average speed of 45 kph.

The RunKeeper app uses the GPS tracker in the iPhone to track your runs, including duration, distance, pace, calories burned, and path traveled on a map. The app reads your current stats over your headphones as you run, and the virtual coach warns if you are ahead or behind pace.
