Kerala: Visually-challenged girl tops Class 12 Exam in disabled category

Hannah Alice Simon, a girl from Kochi district of Kerala has secured first rank in class 12th Board examinations in the disabled category. She is a motivational speaker, a singer, and a YouTuber. Despite her underlying condition of ‘Microphthalmia’, Hannah scored 496 out of 500 in CBSE class 12 Exam. While talking to ANI, Hannah Alice Simon said, “My parents made this choice for me when you study in a special school for 12 years you are cut off from the rest of the world.

New teachers must have knowledge of Braille

BEd and DElEd students will be compulsorily given information about initial knowledge of Braille and Sign Language.

In this way, at least 10 thousand teachers will be trained in elementary knowledge in the entire state. In the programme organized at ICF Ashram Bhopal, Director of State Education Center Dhanraju S said that teachers from all the districts of the state and mobile resource consultants were addressing the training session of Braille script and sign language.

Six Pune women selected to play in Blind Football Asian Championship

PUNE: A team of 10 visually impaired women aged between 18  and 25 years from Mai Balbhavan, an NGO at Dehu Road, won a gold medal at the women’s national blind Football Federation.
Six team members have been selected .. in the national team and will represent the country in the  Blind Football Asian Championships to be hosted in Kochi, Kerala from November 9-20 this year.

Ministry extends consultation period for draft disability policy again

The Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry on Thursday extended the time for feedback on its draft national policy on disability from Friday (July 15) to August 31, while activists continued to raise demands for translations into sign language and regional languages.
This was the second extension given by the Ministry’s Department of Empowerment of Persons of Disabilities (DEPwD), after a one-week extension was given from July 9 to Friday (July 15).

Meet visually-impaired but multi-faceted Dillip Baral, a resident of Suryapur under Bagada GP of Kendrapada block. He ekes out his living by opening a cycle repairing shop in his locality. Besides this, he has a reputation of being a good stove repairer and electronics  goods mechanic. He is a popular singer in the locality too.

Visually impaired college students struggle to find scribes to help them write their exams. A fortnight ago a message was doing the rounds in social media appealing for scribes. The appeal had come from a city college which has nearly 100 blind students in the undergraduate programme.

Online singing contest for visually impaired

An online singing contest for the visually impaired titled ‘The Voice of Saksham’ was organised by NGO Saksham with the support of Canara Bank here on Monday.

The contest marked the birthday of Helen Keller, an American author, who suffered from hearing and visual disabilities. Youth from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh participated in this competition.
