Participating in an Exhibition, organised with the support of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, under the aegis of National Conference on Harnessing Technology for the Empowerment of person with Visual Impairments, Oxigen Services India Pvt. Ltd, India’s pioneering payment solutions provider launched an initiative to support people with visual impairment to enable them to avail banking services that they otherwise till now have been eluded from.

About a year ago the Senate fell five votes short of ratifying an international treaty that would improve protections for the disabled. It was an ignoble spectacle as the opponents rebuffed Bob Dole, a former colleague and disabled veteran, who came to the Senate floor to lobby for it. The Senate now has a chance to redeem itself.

Adrienne Asch, an internationally known bioethicist who opposed the use of prenatal testing and abortion to select children free of disabilities, a stance informed partly by her own experience of blindness, died on Tuesday at her home in Manhattan. She was 67.
 

At her death, Adrienne Asch was the director of the Center for Ethics and the Edward and Robin Milstein professor of bioethics at Yeshiva University in Manhattan.
 

Grooming Blind Children Can Be Tricky

Dear Readers, A common folklore in some tribal settings has it that a young man who was blind right from birth was accorded by Almighty God a brief moment, about two seconds, to see.

The man appraised his surroundings in a hurry with amazement bordering on awe. He was astonished to see a donkey grazing about three metres away from him. He was thrilled by what he saw. The object, which was busy eating was stunningly beautiful.

For the festive season, NGOs offer a range of gifting ideas that will make a difference to the lives of the underprivileged.

At the Pune School and Home for the Blind, groups of four students make a product called Candle In Wine Glass. The wax, in orange and yellow, is poured into transparent glasses. When you light them, they brighten up your room. But when you buy them, they brighten up the lives of those students — in every group, three are visually impaired and one partially sighted.

The children at MBCN are very excited about making products for this Diwali. This would include making handmade and printed paper carry bags, envelops, gift box, chocolate box, jewelry box, cobra files products, bangle box, office kit, gift kit etc. and various handmade products. The products made by the children would be sold out at the Kiosk in some of the prominent malls of Wave group - Centre Stage mall (Noida), Wave mall (Ludhiana and Lucknow) to promote the hard work and aptitude of the differently abled students of MBCN.

I am a visually impaired person. Soon after graduating from Purdue University West Lafayette, I lost a significant amount of my vision due to a disease known as rod-cone dystrophy. Although I have been legally blind now for nearly 40 years, my circumstance has not deterred me from enjoying and participating in many of the same activities as a person with sight would experience.

Art knows no boundaries or language, and Silent Hues, an exhibition of paintings done by visual and hearing impaired artists, the current show at Kalarasa, exemplifies that. Foundation of Art and Culture for Deaf (FACD) has tied up with the art gallery to provide these artists a platform to showcase their works.
