Writer failed me in Zilla Parishad exam: Visually impaired girl to HC

A visually challenged girl has knocked at the doors of the Bombay high court alleging that she was not provided with a proper writer for the written examination to fill up vacant posts in the Zilla Parishad in the Thane district.

Prachi Shrisikar, who has lost 80 per cent of her vision, had written a letter to the HC, which was converted into a suo motu (on its own) writ petition by chief justice Mohit Shah.

During the hearing on Thursday, a division bench of the chief justice and justice MS Sanklecha sought a response from the Thane Zilla Parishad by October 9.

Visually-impaired can’t see coins !

With the visually impaired in the state having a hard time distinguishing the recently issued  Re 1, Re 2, Re 5 and 50 paise  coins, the Kerala chapter of  Daisy Forum of India, an NGO involved in production of books and reading material in blind accessible format, has submitted a memorandum to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to issue Braille-friendly notes and coins.

The NGO complains the visually impaired, who want to lead independent lives, are forced to depend on others to tell the coins apart.

Blind persons seek transfer of official

Around 200 visually-challenged persons staged a protest in Poonamallee on Tuesday against the head of the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH).
They sought the official’s transfer for some remarks he made at a public meeting in August. The Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, New Delhi, has now issued a show-cause notice to the official.

Fasting visually impaired loses 7 kg

Despite deteriorating health and losing seven kilograms weight in a week, a visually impaired student continued his hunger strike on the seventh day a Regal Square on Sunday.

Arun Yadav, who has been on fast unto death with his fellow students staging dharna , fell ill as doctors examined his condition.

While Arun called his condition "starting to feel weak," his supporters said he has become extremely weak and has lost seven KGs so far.

Civic infrastructure in major Indian cities still fails to provide for the needs of people with disabilities.Every year, the monsoon brings with it an outpouring of angst against the poor state of our civic infrastructure. This is completely justified. But spare a thought for a category of people for whom accessing infrastructure is a daily struggle, no matter what the season. According to the WHO and World Bank report on disability, 2011, approximately 15 per cent of the world's population lives with a disability.

India's visually impaired cricketers ignored

India's visually impaired cricketers after they won the T20 world cup in December seek recognition for their efforts, but the BCCI, the richest cricket board, refuses to help these champions. The team has been fighting for affiliation with the BCCI and so far their pleas have gone unheard. The BCCI has cited rule book for ignoring the achievements of these cricketers, says an affiliation can be granted if they are associated with local state body.

No room for disabled in Bhopal schools

Parents of three specially-abled children have made all efforts to seek admission in local schools but to no avail.

Now, the parents are demanding justice for their children (Right to study). “I approached Green Field School, Anand Vihar School and Aurobindo School (in Tulsi Nagar and Shivaji Nagar locality). The school management denied admission to my visually impaired daughter,” said Rashmi Kushwah, mother of 5-year-old Sargam.

Sans Eyes

50-year-old Abu Gawere was a welder for the Indian Army, and was afraid he would lose his job when his eyesight began to decline. According to Section 47 of the Disability Act, a person cannot be fired due to his disability, but Gawere knew that the Indian Army was exempted from this. Not knowing what to do next, he turned to Eyeway.org, who did a little research of their own; and found out that civilians employed by the Indian Army cannot be fired due to disability. Thanks to the efforts of the team at Eyeway.org, Abu Gawere continued in a secure job.

Are Indian rupee notes and coins friendly to the visually-impaired?

R. Nagaraj, a visually-impaired seller of candles and agarbattis in Ooty, is extra careful when he handles money. He feels every rupee note with his fingers and discerns the denomination based on the length, breadth and thickness. Despite his attempts, there are times when customers get away with giving him short change. “If only our notes had Braille numbers!” says Nagaraj. How friendly are our rupee notes and coins to the visually-impaired?

Air India Put Disabled Passengers Through Needless Misery

In breach of Indian and European regulations, India's state owned flag carrier Air India puts passengers with disabilities through needless misery.
 
The sighting of scores of disabled passengers left waiting for assistance after disembarking Air India flights has become part of the daily routine at major airports served by India's flag carrier. The reason why vulnerable passengers are left waiting without assistance for up to one hour is that the airline does not send assistance requests to airports.
