While the Election Commission of Delhi introduced a non-visual desktop access (NVDA) on its website around a year ago for persons with disabilities (PWD), the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the EC, Punjab, are yet to provide the facility to blind voters.

Surprisingly, the state does not maintain a separate data for visually impaired voters and those suffering from various physically and mental ailments.

Do we really care for special children?

Thu, 01/05/2017 - 12:44 -- geeta.nair

Of course it is a positive development to term children with disabilities ‘special or gifted children’ but similar things should happen in Urdu, Sindhi and other languages as we still tend to refer to them as maazoorin Urdu/Sindhi or have just translated the same word which is not understood very well. Changing a language is the first and foremost step towards changing behaviour of the public at large. But it appears that it has failed to influence the existing belief, “once disable, always disable”. As a result, special children are considered a liability, burden and a shame.

'Life is extremely difficult for disabled people in this city'

Tue, 09/06/2016 - 10:59 -- geeta.nair

RIO DE JANEIRO: For sports fan Heitor Luiz de Menezes, the 2016 Olympics should have been a dream come true. The 44-year-old from Rio had tickets to several events including the opening and closing ceremony at the historic Maracana stadium.

But after difficulties getting to and from the venues in his wheelchair, he gave up.

From the excessively steep access ramps at the football stadium to the disabled parking spaces that had been reserved for official cars at the beach volleyball arena, the lack of mobility provision was an insult too far.
