PM donates $1.52m to visually impaired cricketers

Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller on Tuesday presented a cheque valued at $1.52 million to the Jamaica Visually Impaired Cricket Association (JVICA) at Jamaica House.

The funds will go towards covering the cost for hosting the upcoming 7th regional visually impaired cricket tournament to be held July 18-24, the Office of the Prime Minister said.

Jaipur boy Gaurav Agarwal tops 2013 civil services exam

A total 1,122 candidates have cleared the prestigious Civil Services Examination 2013, with Gaurav Agrawal, a BTech from IIT Kanpur and also an IIM Lucknow alumnus, bagging the top position. While the second rank has gone to Munish Sharma, a BSc in bio-chemistry from Sri Venkateswara College here, Bharti Dixit, an MBBS from Lady Hardinge Medical College here, is the top-scoring woman candidate, with overall fifth rank.

Chances are it wouldn't stay your favourite for very long.

As a braillist – someone who uses braille – the dream for me is when the opposite happens. A small number of chain restaurants offer menus in braille; sometimes, they're even up to date.

Phrases like ‘on cloud nine’ or ‘all smiles’ would seem too far-fetched for 25-year-old Sreeja P, a visually-impaired young woman who reaped two gold and three silver medals at the recently-concluded third Kerala State Paralympic Championship 2014 in Kozhikode, when her dream to get a secure government job remains distant.

 Sreeja clinched a first in shot put and discus throw and came second in 100-metre race, long jump and javelin throw in the championship.

Four More WIPO Members Sign Marrakesh Treaty For Visually Impaired

During a signing ceremony held today at the World Intellectual Property Organization, the European Union, France, Greece and India signed the treaty adopted last June to provide a wider access to copyrighted books in special format for visually impaired people.

The Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled has now been signed [pdf] by 64 of WIPO’s 187 members.

China offers college entrance exam in Braille

Chinese students will be able to sit for the college entrance exam in Braille, the ministry of education has announced.

Human Rights Watch described this week’s directive as an important breakthrough after years of campaigning by disability rights advocates in China, where educational and employment discrimnation are rife.

While a few blind students have studied at university, the vast majority have been effectively barred from higher education because there was no provision for them.

When 23 year old Rakshith visited an institution for the blind in his city of Bangalore,he was shocked at how difficult learning was for the visually impaired, specially the beginners for whom each lesson was torturous.
